Welcome to AGS

Welcome to and thank you for visiting our web-site. Aberdeen Geological Society comprises a lively mix of professional geologists (both working and retired) as well as amateurs from different career backgrounds, all with a shared enthusiasm for things geological. We aim to share knowledge, experience and keep interest alive by scheduling a programme of evening talks given by guest lecturers during the winter months and a series of guided field excursions from May through the summer months.

Forthcoming Events

Out schedule of Field Excursion 2026 programme, finished with a long weekend to the Northern Cairngorms, covering 4 sites with particular glacial morphology. 									AGS member and many-times excursion leader, dr Stuart Archer, will present an afternoon talk at the Aberdeen Art Gallery to celebrate the tercentenary of the “Father of Modern Geology”, James Hutton who redefined geological time and introduced the concept of Deep Time. The talk is open to the general public.

The field excursions are a highly popular and enjoyable part of AGS’ activity, giving members the opportunity to explore local natural environments within North-East Scotland, a region with a wealth of stunning geology. The 26 /27 winter lecture programme is currently being finalised. 1 event in February and 2 events in March with preliminary details have been added to this website’s Events thus far.

We publish a number of Excursion Guides; these are updates on those featuring in ‘Geology of the Aberdeen Area’ edited by Trewin, Kneller and Gillen, which regrettably is now out of print.

Website Content – What’s New

September ’26:

Five new albums have been added to the Gallery – the photos are from the 30th August excursion to Skatie Shore, the 19th September to Cairn Gorm, 2 associated with Glen Roy & Glen Turret on the 20th September and the 5th concerns Glen Einich on 21st September.

With all the excitement around the Bayeaux Tapestry exhibition in London, we are very grateful to member, Craig Lindsay, who has discovered a missing panel of a similar tapestry. We are pleased to show this amazing panel – downloadable from our Special Features table.

All 20 volumes (1922 to 1988) of the Deeside Field are now available from our Archive, Also please check the section at the foot of the Features /Deeside Field page where we suggest articles that are appropriate to current AGS activities.
