AGS Field Trip Program 2017
AGS weekend field trip to Edinburgh 24th-26th March
We are pleased to advise details of the forthcoming AGS weekend field trip to Edinburgh 24th-26th March led by Angus Miller. The weekend field trip will take place Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th March with a briefing Friday evening in the centre of Edinburgh. The program for the weekend is as follows:
Friday evening: Short talk on the geological history of the Lothians and an introduction to the field excursion (about an hour). Meet at the Edinburgh Methodists (Meeting Room 1) at Nicolson Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9BX http://edinburghmethodist.com/ Time TBC
Saturday: Meet (9am) at Blackford Hill, short walk around the hill to explore Devonian volcanic rocks associated with the end stages of the Caledonian Orogeny. Visit the Agassiz Rock (where Agassiz found evidence of the importance of ice erosion in creating Scotland's landscape) and then climb to the summit for one of the best views of Edinburgh and its geological structure.
Lunchtime visit to Cockburn Museum, Edinburgh University. (TBC)
Afternoon excursion in Holyrood Park to visit a Carboniferous sandstone quarry and important elements of the Arthur's Seat volcanic centre finish with the dolerite intrusion at Salisbury Crags - with a link to James Hutton.
Sunday: Travel 30 miles east, meet (10am) at Barns Ness, near Dunbar - fossiliferous Carboniferous limestone and cyclothems, raised beach.
Lunch stop in Dunbar, time to visit John Muir Birthplace or explore the geology of the harbour area. Afternoon excursion to St Baldred's Cradle, superb Carboniferous sandstone outcrops with a range of sedimentary features, and an intrusive basaltic plug in a beautiful coastal setting. Finish mid-afternoon.
Accommodation - Please book your own accommodation.
Evening meal - We will plan to organise an evening meal in Edinburgh on Saturday evening for those interested.
Transport - Please arrange your own transport. We do encourage car sharing between members. If you do not have transport, please let us know and we'll try to get you a lift.
